The Big Questions

Most people assume that only adults are capable of finding answers to life’s

big questions, but is that really true?  Young people are as subject to the answers

to life’s big questions as anyone else, arguably more subject to them.

Why shouldn’t schoolchildren be given the chance to find out what they know,

and why should the answers they come up with be any less valid than those posited

by adults?  Some think that children should tackle those big questions as soon

as they are able to formulate them, not to give them something to worry about,

but to give them something to think over, dwell on and add to over the course

of their school careers, and indeed over their entire lives.

Getting people involved in attempts to answer life’s big questions would go a

long way to creating responsible citizens, caring parents, motivated and informed

voters, and it would inevitably make them more difficult to govern - no bad thing

at this point in the history of the world.

Lastly, involving learners and encouraging them to formulate their own questions

and then discussing them sounds a whole lot better than the more traditional form

that questions take in the classroom - Tell me what’s inside my head? From the

person at the front of the class - the answers might be more interesting too!
